Summary: This course, originally presented live on December 13th, 2024, teaches attendees how jurisdictions can bring stakeholders together to assess school threats and prevent school shootings. The course will cover what stakeholders should be involved, what role the District Attorney's Office can play, what factors to consider when assessing threats, what action to take once a threat is identified, and the devastating impact school shootings have on victims, witnesses, and their families.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Learn how to bring stakeholders together to assess school threats, including prosecutors, investigators, psychologists, school officials and psychiatric emergency teams.
(2) Learn what steps to take once a threat is received, how to understand and assess risk, what information to compile and how to obtain in, and to how prevent a serious incident.
(3) Learn about the emotional and physical harm that school shootings cause and the devastating impact on students, teachers, other school personnel, and their families.
CLE: This course, originally a live webinar on December 13th, 2024, was recorded for on-demand attendance. The live webinar was approved for CLE credit in certain states; however, NDAA is not responsible for applying for CLE approval or reporting CLE credits for this on-demand webinar. Attendees are responsible for ensuring their state accepts their applications for self-study CLE credits. Upon completion of your on-demand course (video, quiz and survey), you will be able to access a CLE Uniform Certificate of Attendance. If your state accepts self-study credits, you can submit this Certificate and other required materials directly to your state bar. NDAA does not apply for CLE approval for recorded content or report on-demand CLE attendance for this webinar. Attendees must self-submit this course for approval in their home state. Andrija Lopez has served as a prosecutor for 21 years. In her current assignment at the juvenile division, she is the team leader for case issuance as well as the team leader for targeted school violence cases. She has reviewed and prosecuted over 480 school threat cases. She co-authored the San Diego County School Threat Protocol first released in 2018 and revised in 2021. The protocol has been shared with numerous law enforcement partners & key stakeholders at the local, state, and national level. Andrija created and chairs the San Diego School Threat Assessment Team ("STAT") established in 2018. This multi-disciplinary team convenes to discuss challenging targeted school violence cases. STAT works collaboratively to identify resources to assist a juvenile in need and to ensure public safety. Andrija is a member of the San Diego County threat group. She serves as a liaison for the Joint Terrorism Task Force and was a delegate at the World Anti- Bullying Forum in Dublin, Ireland. Andrija was recognized by the San Diego County Juvenile Justice Commission for her outstanding commitment to youth in the juvenile justice system. In May of 2024, STAT received the “Excellence in the Pursuit of Justice Community Impact Award” from the United States Attorney’s Office.
