Summary: Originally a live webinar on July 23rd, 2024, this course covers the evidence-based program of Functional Family Therapy (FFT), including the components of the program, the population the program serves, and how it is implemented. The course will cover the benefits of working with youth and their families in their homes and will cover different funding sources for FFT. The course will also cover challenges in implementing FFT and how to address those challenges. This On Demand course continues to assist juvenile court prosecutors who make recommendations to the juvenile court about what conditions and programs the court should impose at a youth's disposition/sentencing by providing juvenile court prosecutors with the information about this evidence-based program, including what the components are, the populations it serves, and how it is implemented. This will assist juvenile court prosecutors in making informed recommendations to the court at disposition/sentencing. This course will benefit both juvenile court prosecutors and allied juvenile justice professionals who will learn about this evidence-based program.
Learning Objectives:
(1) The learn about the benefits of utilizing evidence-based programs.
(2) To learn about the components of FFT and the population it serves; this will help juvenile court prosecutors make informed decisions to the juvenile court when FFT is an available option that the court is or may consider.
(3) To learn about the importance of serving youth at home with their families.

Kayla Merkel, MSW, LCSW is the Executive Director for AMIKids North Carolina Family Services. Kayla provided Functional Family Therapy (FFT) to families for four years as both a therapist and supervisor before she stepped into the Director role. Kayla joined the AMIkids family immediately following her graduate studies at the University of South Carolina (UofSC) where she earned her Masters of Social Work with a focus in children, youth and families. It was at the UofSC where she found her passion for working with youth and families involved in the juvenile justice system. Her time working with youth in a detention facility in Columbia, South Carolina opened her eyes to the support needed to help youth and families continue to grow together following their involvement with juvenile justice.

Kasi Floyd
Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC)
AMIkids NC Family Services; Made Well Center for Wholeness
Kasi is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) with a passion for serving those in need. Kasi holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of North Carolina- Wilmington and a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from North Carolina State University. Kasi started her career as a children’s counselor at InterAct of Wake County’s residential domestic violence shelter serving survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. She then spent twelve years serving youth on juvenile probation and their families as a Functional Family Therapist, Supervisor, Program Manager, and Executive Director for AMIkids NC Family Services, before stepping into the training support role with the organization. Kasi also provides outpatient therapy at the Made Well Center for Wholeness in Wilmington North Carolina.
